Lighters and matches are the leading cause of fire deaths in children. It is important that you do not underestimate your child’s curiosity about fire, or their ability to strike up a match or use a lighter. Be sure to store matches and lighters somewhere safe where your children cannot reach or even see them. Remember, even ‘child-proof’ lighters can be lit by children and are still not safe for them to play with.
Also, be sure never to leave a lighter in your car, near a heater or stove, or anywhere that it may be exposed to heat. If the temperature becomes warm enough, it could cause the lighter to explode.
